733 Mineral Springs Rd., Ancaster, Ontario L9H 1A1

Celebrate Emancipation Day with special activities and refreshments at the picturesque Griffin House. Spend a pleasant afternoon exploring this fascinating preserved nineteenth century home set on a hilltop overlooking the beautiful Dundas Valley and its story of early African Canadian settlers. What better location to learn more about Emancipation Day, established in honour of the abolition of slavery by the British Empire on August 1, 1834. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy with your family and we will provide a taste of hand cranked old fashioned ice cream.

Families can explore Black history together as they stroll the paths of the Dundas Valley and visit Griffin House National Historical Site. Your visit starts with a hike from the Griffin House parking lot along a trail to the Griffin House. Remember to dress for the weather. Upon arrival at Griffin house you can warm up with some apple cider and conversation. A spinning demonstration will give children hands on experience of early settler life. Griffin House is a 19th century home that stands as a testament to the strength and bravery of African Canadians who journeyed to Southern Ontario. Parking and access by the Hermitage Parking Lot, 1.5 miles west of Ancaster on Sulphur Springs Road (near the intersection of Sulphur Springs and Mineral Springs Road). Donations gladly accepted. Parking fees will apply at Hermitage Parking Lot.

Winding its way along the Credit River through woodlands, wetlands and past geologic features is the multi-use Culham Trail. This is a continuous, off-road trail for 11.4 kilometres between Erindale Park, located near Dundas Street West and Mississauga Road, to Britannia Road West, as well as a 2.1 kilometre section from from Old Derry Road West to the Brampton border via Meadowvale Conservation Park. The two off-road trails are connected via an on-road, unsigned route. This trail connects historic villages including Erindale, Streetsville and the Old Meadowvale Village Heritage Conservation District; Riverwood Garden Park and Visual Arts Mississauga; travels a portion of the former Guelph Radial Railway route; passes milling sites including the ADM Milling Company – in continuous operation since the 1840s; includes interpretive signage, the Credit Valley Conservation offices; and, intersects the Burnhamthorpe Trail, a major east west route. From Erindale Park on-road trails via Mississauga Road offers opportunities reach to the Waterfront Trail, the village of Port Credit to the south and Sawmill Valley Trail and into Erin Mills to the west.

Located within the Churchill Meadows community in west Mississauga, O’Connor Park is the host to a centrally featured trail called Cathy’s Walk, a nature walk that acts as the transitory border between an enhanced natural environmental wonderland and an active recreational park.

Users can walk this trail from its southern limits and experience natural features to the west including a carefully redeveloped and expanded wetland complemented by newly constructed meadows. This quiet oasis, home to birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and insects, is separated by Cathy’s walk from the park’s more active recreation facilities including soccer fields and play areas to the east. Repeat visitors to the park will get to enjoy changing seasonal views of the natural areas, and be able to appreciate the ecological succession that will develop year after year.

The trail itself is constructed using stonedust and boardwalks, connecting to an overlook and seating at the wetland’s edge. The boardwalk allows for best views into and across the wetland as the trail moves through the park.
